Abstract

The activity addressed the identification of technological options, constraints, current challenges, efficiency, risks, costs and many other aspects which we will be happy to present. In particular the activity had the objectives to develop an approach for the future utilisation of satellite laser ranging technologies to support space safety applications. Recent and foreseeable improvements in laser technology allowing high energy, short pulses, and precisely timed components have been considered to quantify a reduction in the collision alert rate for operational satellites and just-in-time collision avoidance between non-active objects, as part of a single roadmap. In a multi-disciplinary approach, system performance, network capability, safety aspects, and target behaviour have been addressed. Wherever possible, commonalities with technologies for scientific laser tracking and optical communication have been identified.
