Abstract

Detailed investigations of interference effects between over-the-wing mounted nacelles (OWN) and airframe were accomplished with the aid of highfidelity CFD tools on two aircraft configurations. The configurations differ in a variation of the wing planform from a backward (REF3) to a forward swept layout (REF4). The impact of the OWN was investigated by using an automated process chain varying engine position, wing twist distribution, and airfoil section geometry to achieve an aerodynamically efficient aircraft design in the presence of the OWN. Ensuing from the surrogate-based optimization, the data set was used to evaluate the interference between OWN and wing.
