Abstract

High velocity impacts can happen during the operation of civil aircrafts due to unplanned events like bird strike or foreign object damage (FOD). The development of appropriate and reliable simulation methodologies for such load cases on various materials is necessary to choose adequate materials to be considered for aircraft structures. The overall objective is to contribute to the development of simulation tools for the design of lightweight and cost efficient reinforcements required at the aircraft rear end. The current investigations reported in this paper give an overview of the developments contributing to these tasks. They encompass different high velocity impact test campaigns, the development and validation of an adequate simulation methodology, and the utilization of this simulation methodology for first shielding assessments.
