Abstract

The turbulent hypersonic flow past a blunt fin/ramp configuration is investigated numerically. The implicit finite-difference method which is used, with upwind discretization and TVD characteristic, integrates the compressible mass-weighted Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Perfect gas is assumed. Both the algebraic turbulence model according to Baldwin & Lomax and various versions of the two-equation-k-epsilon model according to Jones & Launder are used to solve the equations. One version of this model takes into account the influence of compressibility on turbulence. The influence of the turbulence models on the flow field solutions is investigated, the grid influence is discussed, and the topology of the flow field is depicted using the results. A comparison is made with new experimental data, in order to validate the investigations. Finally, the validity of transferring the results to free-flight conditions is discussed
