Abstract
The main objective of the interACT project was to enable the safe integration of Automated Vehicles (AV) into mixed traffic environments by designing, im-plementing and evaluating solutions for safe, cooperative and expectation‐conforming interaction of the AV with both its on‐board user and other human road users (HRU). The project focused on urban use cases and ob-served how today’s human-human interactions work in specific traffic scenarios like intersections and parking spaces. Establishing an efficient and safe AV-traffic participant’s interaction, it seems likely that central elements of the existing human-human interaction need to be replaced by technical means. interACT deals mainly with the design and selection of concrete internal (iHMI) and exter-nal human-machine interfaces (eHMI) and the selection of the appropriate tech-nology to transmit chosen messages in an adequate way. In this section, the overall interACT HMI design process is described. One ex-emplary use case is produced to describe the development in an illustrative way. Finally, the technical implementation of HMI solutions to transfer information re-garding the vehicle’s intention to AV’s on-board user (via iHMI) and other human traffic participants (via eHMI) is explained.
