Abstract

The increasing demand on CFRP parts requires automated manufacturing processes. Using the high potential of an automated net-shape RTM process to enable high production rates and to ensure sufficient part quality, better understanding of single pro-cess steps is needed. One of the crucial steps within a CFRP manu-facturing process is the consolidation: a stack of dry fiber textiles is formed under pressure and temperature on a mold. After the consolidation the thickness of the preform is increased due to relaxation effects. This leads to yet not predicable deviations in pre-form geometry, especially for curved or angled parts. This process-induced deformation can be influenced by varying the process parameters. In an automated production, the prediction of the preform geometry is necessary to ensure a reliable process and high part quality. Therefore, experimental consolidation trials were performed as prerequisite to create a prediction model.
