Abstract

The Coordinated Research Centre 880 (CRC880) focuses on the development of a new active high-lift system, which enables short take-off and landing, low fuel consumption, and low noise immission. In order to assess the active high-lift system on an aircraft level, several vehicle variants that are equipped with this active high-lift system were developed within the CRC880 over the past 9 years. This article describes the CRC880 vehicle concepts and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages in detail. Furthermore, the noise prediction methodology is described and the noise immission of the vehicle concepts is evaluated on a comparative basis. Results indicate that a propeller-driven short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft is cost-efficient but has increased noise immission compared to a current aircraft. On the other side, STOL aircraft with turbofan engines located on top and aft of the main wing for fan sound shielding are more expensive but offer significant noise reductions.
