Frustration has negative effects on user experience (UX) both in manual and automated driving. Therefore, it negatively influences driving performance and system acceptance. To address this, the project F-RELACS (Frustration Real-Time Recognition for an Adaptive In-Car System) aims to demonstrate a frustration-aware assistant called MUsE (My User Experience Improvement System) that is capable of estimating the user’s momentary level of frustration and offering tailored support to improve UX. However, up to now little is known about interaction strategies for automotive user interfaces that successfully reduce the user’s frustration and improve UX in frustrating driving situations. Here we report the initial results from user focus groups (current status: 2 groups with in total 11 participants) that are conducted to identify suitable interaction strategies to develop a frustration-aware assistant for enhanced in-vehicle UX in a user-centered design process.
