Abstract

A single phase DNS including temperature and vapor concentration as active scalars is used to investigate the influence of phase transition effects in turbulent flow through a cooled channel. Analysis of the flow fields reveals high-velocity sweeps as the dominant transport mechanism of vapor across the phase boundary, leading to heterogeneous condensate accumulation and release of latent heat at the wall. Spectra of turbulent kinetic energy show that conversely, the coherent structures are themselves modified by condensation events.
