Abstract

Large-scale Electrical Energy Storage (EES) supports the expanding integration of intermittent renewable energy sources allowing a reliable and flexible supply of low-carbon or even zero-carbon electricity. However, capital costs of these storage concepts are still to high for an econimical plant operation. Large-scale conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy, which is stored in Thermal Energy Storage (TES) increases the process energy density and leads to large flexibility options as well as higher cost-efficiency with only moderate losses in round-trip efficiency.
