Abstract

Electromagnetic metamaterials are artificial materials with tailorable electromagnetic properties. A typical metamaterial consists of a periodic array of resonance inclusions embedded in a conventional dielectric material. The period of the array and the size of the resonators are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic radiation so that the structure appears to be effectively homogeneous. The effective electromagnetic parameters (dielectric and magnetic constants, surface impedance, reflection and transmission coefficients, etc.) can be adjusted to almost any desired values by suitably choosing the art and the size of the resonators and the period of the array. The presentation is an overview of basic concepts and potential applications of metamaterials in the RCS engineering.
