Abstract
Space propulsion is a wide field of research considering different propulsion concepts such as chemical propulsion, electric propulsion, airbreathing propulsion etc.. However, up to date only rocket propulsion is utilized on operational space launch vehicles in a routine manner. Most of the alternative concepts are still under development. On overview of this situation will be given. The main focus of the lecture will be on rocket propulsion. The basic equations describing the thrust generation, the specific impulse and the rocket equation will be discussed. Further, the different engines cycles which are commonly utilized and the different components of a rocket engine will be highlighted.
