Abstract

The electrification of propulsion systems creates new opportunities and challenges for aircraft design. This applies to all kinds of aircraft but especially for general aviation, air taxis, or unmanned area vehicles. Since electrical drives can be distributed and temporarily overpowered, also vertical take-off and landing becomes more feasible. This talk introduces how system modelling and simulation can support these developments and reports on the Bavarian research project Powerlab in cooperation with partners from the Ludwig Bölkow Campus. Special focus is thereby on hybrid-electric power systems. Model-based methods can also be used for the development of control algorithms for the overall energy management. The corresponding target is that all on-board sources and consumers of electric energy can be optimally designed and operated.
