The higher the production rate, the higher the need for automation. But also for lower rates, automation is beneficial when it comes to reproducibility and precision. Aircraft-parts are usually built shipset wise, which means that every other pro-duced part is a different one. The only effective way to organize logistics and production planning for lot size 1 is a dynamically balanced line with vertical and horizontal communication. This means that all data concerning the current status of product and machine must be available for every other part of the process including management, customer and service provider. Also process calibration becomes important when there is no way for process initialization after start up, because of differing parameters and initial conditions for each part. Transparent processes, crosslinked communication of conditions, self-organized and balanced production lines are mandatory for lot size 1 production of aircraft parts, which is the key for economical production.
