Abstract
Dynamic crushing of quasi-isotropic composite tubes made of IM7/8552 CFRP is simulated using two intra-laminar continuum damage models that have been implemented in LS-DYNA and ABAQUS/Explicit codes. The predictions using the CODAM2 model in LS-DYNA (MAT219) is compared to a Ladevèze-based damage model implemented as a user material subroutine (VUMAT) in ABAQUS/Explicit. The results demonstrate capabilities, effects of various parameters and limitations of both damage models, thus contributing to the further understanding and improvement of the structural analysis of composites under dynamic loading conditions such as crash or high velocity impact events.
