Abstract

Flow field measurements of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard Convection (RBC) in a cubic cell filled with water are performed using Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) and a newly developed high-density particle tracking velocimetry (HD-PTV) technique. With these two techniques, the flow field in RBC at a Prandtl number Pr = 6.9 and a Rayleigh number of Ra = 1.0 · 1010 is measured and compared. It is shown that a three-dimensional (3D) large-scale circulation is reflected in a diagonal plane of the sample in both, the vector fields obtained with Tomo-PIV and the particle trajectories resulting from HD-PTV. Additionally, the latter requires 56 times less CPU time and 125,000 times less disk space.
