Abstract

A semi-analyticalmodelforthenon-linearanalysisofsimplysupported,unstiffenedlaminated composite cylindersandconesusingtheRitzmethodandtheClassicalLaminatedPlateTheoryis proposed. AmatrixnotationisusedtoformulatetheproblemusingDonnell'sandSanders'non-linear equations.Theapproximationfunctionsproposedarecapabletosimulatetheelephant'sfooteffect,a common phenomenonandacommonfailuremodeforcylindricalandconicalstructuresunderaxial compression. Axial,torsionandpressureloadscanbeappliedindividuallyorcombined,andsolutionsfor linear static,linearbucklingandnon-linearbucklinganalysesarepresentedandverified usinga commercial finite elementsoftware.Thepresentednon-linearbucklinganalysesusedperturbationloads to createtheinitialgeometricimperfections,showingthecapabilityofthemethodforarbitrary imperfection patterns.Thelinearstiffnessmatricesareintegratedanalyticallyandfortheconical structures anapproximationisproposedtoovercomethenon-integrableexpressions.
