Abstract

In light of the undeniable problems caused by road transport in particular, in recent years there has been growing awareness of the need to make changes in the transport sector — often phrased as a call to make it more “sustainable”. It will not be sufficient to rely on technological developments alone to solve the environmental problems resulting from transport. It will also be necessary to redefine the role and significance of the various forms of transport within a sustainable, multimodal system for both human mobility and the transport of goods. Making sustainable transport a reality will, in any event, require a combination of willingness to change, technological innovation, new organizational and business models, and the commitment of both politicians and the public.
