Abstract

The question of when people invest in photovoltaics (PV) is investigated. We study residential PV in Germany over the years of 2006-2014. The deployment is characterized by pronounced peaks when remunerations are cut. We postulate that potential PV adopters do not only rate its attractiveness in absolute terms of risk-adjusted IRR, but also in relative gains and losses, i.e. in changes of absolute profitability, according to the value function of Prospect Theory.
