Abstract

Aurora is a novel concept for a hypersonic space launcher and involves a series of different configurations based on a common basic configuration. Key elements are the application of thin-ply based composite structures for weight reduction and the optional utilization of drop tanks. Configurations with pure rocket propulsion as well as combined cycle propulsion systems will be investigated. All configurations will utilize a horizontal landing approach. Take-off is in principle possible both in horizontal and vertical mode, whereas horizontal take-off is preferred. This report covers the general concept formulation of the hypersonic launcher concept Aurora as well as the preliminary system design of the first configuration Aurora-R1. Within the concept formulation the idea behind Aurora, basic requirements, as well as the design philosophy will be explained. The preliminary system design of the configuration Aurora R1 includes configuration design, aerodynamic-, mass-, and propulsion-models, as well as trajectory simulation, TPS- and structural-sizing. A special focus will be placed on initial structural trade-off analyses and a first investigations of potential weight savings by using thin-ply based CFRP composites. Finally, next steps for the Aurora system studies will be discussed.
