Abstract

This Master Thesis is a case study to evaluate the effects of temporary emission reductions on air quality under different meteorological conditions. Four cases of the area surrounding Beijing are simulated using a 3-D regional chemical transport model (WRF-Chem) and a meta-comparison is performed considering PM2.5 as exemplary chemical species. Two cases reflecting real conditions of meteorology, trace gases and aerosols are simulated to match with corresponding observations of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and meteorological conditions. Those are then compared to another two hypothetical cases with increased/reduced emissions from the same time and location. A meta-comparison then shows the impact of meteorological conditions that are favourable or unfavourable to reduced air pollution on the efficiency of emission-control measurements.
