The energy system model REMix has been developed and used for more than 10 years at the DLR Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics. Its initial focus was on renewable energy sources (RES) and the electricity system. By now, it is considering all relevant elements in the power system including interactions between the power system and the heating and transport sectors. In contrast to other models, that often consider only typical load situations, REMix allows for a detailed representation of power generation from variable RES and their impacts on back-up power capacities, transmission and storage requirements. REMix consists of two sub-models. One sub-model is used for analysing RES potentials and feed-in time series based on satellite and weather data from different years. The second model part uses a linear optimization approach for determining least-cost supply systems and operation strategies. The contribution provides insights into the current status of development, ongoing research projects, and plans for the future.
