Abstract

This technical report describes the methodology used and the results of the preliminary design of four launcher configurations studied by DLR’s Space Launcher System Analysis division (SART) in Bremen, Germany, in the ANGELA project started in 2012. In the frame of this project funded by DLR-RfM and led by EADS Astrium, with cooperation of MT Aerospace, MBDA Bayern Chemie and Astos Solutions, DLR-SART performed the sizing and staging of four launch vehicle configurations with the capability to inject payloads in the range between 2 and 5 tons to GTO (Geostationary Transfer Orbit). Two HH and two Multi-PH configurations with various numbers of solid boosters are considered. For each launcher the optimisation of the staging is explained and sensitivity analysis results are given. These sensitivity analyses were a prerequisite for a good preparation of the Concurrent Engineering (CE) studies which followed the preliminary design optimisation. The resulting launcher configurations are: • 2 to 6 P36, H110 with 2 shortened Vulcain 2 and H29 with Vinci • 2 to 6 P34, H90 with a new high thrust staged combustion engine and H24 with Vinci • 2 or 3 P120, P120 and H23 with Vinci • 2 or 3 P110, P110 and H23 with Vinci
