Abstract

In 2009 the aviation industry has committed to a set of ambitious high-level goals to reduce its carbon emissions at a global level. The long-term reduction goal of 50% in net CO2-emissions by 2050 relative to 2005 levels is unlikely to be met with evolutionary technolo-gies only. Radically new technologies and aircraft concepts as well as sustainable pro-pulsion energies are likely to prove necessary in addition. To ensure a frictionless implemen-tation of these new technologies into the air transport system, their impacts on aviation stakeholders have to be investigated. Within the AIRCAT project (Assessment of the Impact of Radical Climate-Friendly Aviation Technolo-gies) IATA and DLR identified challenges and obstacles to the introduction of these technol-ogies with a multi-stakeholder expert work-shop. Key conclusions and recommendations for future works and support actions were de-rived. Finally, an assessment of the global carbon emissions reduction potential of the discussed concepts was performed.
