Abstract

Based on blade element/momentum theory the aerodynamic impact of a straight line vortex lying in the plane of a rotor disk is solved analytically for the first time using a realistic swirl velocity profile. The consequences on rotor thrust, on blade aerodynamic moment about the hub and on the collective and cyclic controls needed for disturbance rejection can thus be computed in closed-form. Results are given for a rotor subjected to a wake vortex of a large wind energy turbine.
