Abstract

The compression wave which is generated during the passage of a train through a tunnel may lead to many negative effects like loads on the structure of the train and the tunnel, as well as discomfort of the passengers. These effects can be eased by using vented tunnel portals. The portal geometry was optimised by closing some vents and the effect of the vents was studied using high-speed Particle Image Velocimetry. To estimate the pressure inside of the tunnel with vented portal theoretically several generic parameters are necessary, which were obtained with the PIV-results.
