Abstract

A shift from traditional systems engineering practices towards Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) may provide a more effective way for systems engineers to manage and document project progress. This project sought to demonstrate the benefits of applied MBSE to the development of a small‐scale space system, through the construction of a Systems Modelling Language (SysML) model of the Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) system. Through the construction of the model, SysML based MBSE was judged to be particularly effective in aiding communication, documentation and monitoring system interaction. It was found that a well‐structured SysML model could provide a more effective way to communicate system information. A model could also improve project documentation by providing a central point of reference. Through the model, it was possible to effectively portray system interaction in order to monitor the follow on effects of design changes. Once challenges are addressed, the application of SysML based MBSE promises many benefits for the systems engineering of space systems.
