Abstract
IoSiS (Imaging of Satellites in Space) is a study on surveillance of objects in low earth orbits (LEO) with high degree of detail using microwave sensors. Thereby a ground-based radar system can provide high-resolution images based on the principle of Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR). In the first experimental phase IoSiS includes a broadband X-band radar system allowing range resolutions of up to few centimeters. In combination with a steerable antenna system wide azimuth angles and thus high azimuth resolution can be achieved. This enables for instance the investigation of fine object details or the detection of mechanical damages generated by space debris. This paper outlines technical main characteristics of the IoSiS radar system and first simulation results are discussed in conjunction with the influence of major error sources.
