Abstract

Volcanic ash can provoke serious problems in aircraft and consequently in the air traffic. Within the framework of the project VolcATS (Volcanic ash impact on the Air Transport System) the Institute of Flight Systems of the DLR (German Aerospace Center) is investigating the effects of volcanic ash on aircraft systems. A particular emphasis is placed on disturbances on air data sensors as well as on navigation and communication systems of aircraft. The goal of this work is to identify relevant parameters which affect disturbances during volcanic ash encounters and to conceptually design a test bench in which these implications can be investigated under realistic conditions. This will enable the investigation of the blockage of Pitot-static systems (focus on Pitot tubes) and the electrostatic charging of aircraft components due to volcanic ash. In an iterative process a suitable test bench based on a wind tunnel is being developed considering relevant calculations and other design aspects. Additionally, possible measurement scenarios are elaborated to enable a detailed investigation of the desired quantities.
