Kurzfassung
This paper is aimed at providing a physical interpretation of the polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) signatures observed over a subpolar (polythermal) ice cap. After an exploratory analysis of the PolSAR data revealing the presence of a strong volume scattering component, an existing anisotropic volume scattering model has been used and extended in order to explain the features of the experimental data. Successively, modeled and observed PolSAR signatures are compared using airborne fully polarimetric SAR data collected at P-band by the DLR’s E-SAR system over the Austfonna ice cap (Svalbard archipelago, Norway) during the ICESAR 2007 campaign.
