Kurzfassung
The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), in collaboration with the Regional Information System - International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), conducted a four-day workshop on 5-8 May 2025 on remote sensing for hazard monitoring and modeling in High Mountain Asia (HMA). This event was designed for early-career researchers and graduate students in the fields of geoscience and remote sensing. The workshop took place at the ICIMOD headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. Participants learned about many different techniques and applications of remote sensing, including hands-on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetric and interferometric analysis, machine learning for detection of glacial lakes in HMA, and modeling exercises using the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) [1] and the Subglacial Hydrology and Kinetic Transient Interactions (SHAKTI) [2] subglacial hydrology frameworks. The workshop also included a field excursion to visit local citizen-science water monitoring sites. Beyond the technical scientific skills shared, the participants had the opportunity to interact and work closely with peers from across boundaries throughout the HMA, forming new friendships and professional connections.
