First results obtained by French and German Research Centers towards the CFD computation of the complete helicopter are reported. Improvements of the CFD methods are described: Methods to improve the capture of vortices, preconditioning techniques for improved efficiency and accuracy at low velocities, improvements of the Chimera grid technique, experiences with strong fluid structure coupling. Results for the steady viscous flows around isolated rotors in hover and isolated helicopter fuselages are presented.
