Abstract

This paper describes a currently running basic research project of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The aim is to investigate the behaviour and possibilities of a new shape for re-entry vehicles considering sharp edges and facetted surfaces. The SHEFAX vehicle is a kind of flying wind tunnel test object. The aim is to correlate numerical analysis, wind tunnel test results and real flight data in terms of aerodynamic effects and structural concept for the thermal protection system.
