Kurzfassung
Several experimental investigations were carried out in DLR’s arc heated facility L2K using particle loaded CO2/N2 flow simulating a dust storm scenario in Martian atmosphere. Main objective was the generation and validation of a particle erosion correlation for the Norcoat Liège ablator which is the prospective thermal protection material for the EXOMARS mission. The test conditions were specified based on three trajectory points. In addition to the erosion measurements some auxiliary techniques were applied at L2K for the first time to measure particle flow rates and particle velocities. The erosion behaviour of Norcoat Liège is described exemplarily from selected particle erosion tests at different heat loads and from a test series with varying particle flow rates.
