Job Requirements of Instructor pilots

The aim of the presented study was to investigate Instructor pilot requirements. Instructor pilots are mostly selected by their piloting abilities and little work has been done systematically to find out, what other skills (e.g. interactive, coaching) are relevant. N=230 instructor pilots from different AC types, ops and positions (ab initio flight training, line training, long haul etc.) from a major European airline participated in a job requirement analysis using a job requirement questionnaire. Some significant differences were observed between the two profiles pilot vs. instructor. For instance, the instructor pilot's profile included significantly higher values in interactive skills like 'self control' and 'coaching' compared to the pilot’s requirements.
