Using OpenStreetMap Geo Data for Map-Matching Applications in Railways

This paper presents a tool chain including different algorithms with which OpenStreetMap (OSM) data can be used for map-matching applications in railways. In particular, it is analysed how diverse geo data enclosed in the very simple OSM data format can be structured for being used in a modular data model for various railway-focused applications, e.g. map-matching. The central idea of this paper’s approach is to model the coordinates of the elements on the one side and the track network topology on the other side as independent base layers for a generic multi-level layer map. Based on this, all further railway infrastructure objects and parameters are stored in various topic-specific layers referencing the two base layers. The tool chain has been implemented and first results indicate that the proposed model is applicable for storing multiple geo data types in a common data format for railway map matching applications.
