Kurzfassung
World-wide interest in attaining cheaper access to space by developing technologies such as supersonic combustion (SCRAMJET) engines, coupled with the degree of activity in ground-testing of the pertinent physical phenomena, have led to a decision to modify the existing DLR High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel (HEG) to provide full simulation conditions for flight at Mach 8 at an altitude of 27 kilometers. A design study has shown that a new shorter contoured nozzle will be needed, leading also to modifications in the existing test section and optical diagnostics placement. The new tunnel run parameters (piston trajectory) and the new low enthalpy (-3 MJ kg'1) conditions will also need to be calibrated.
