Kurzfassung
Active cooling systems are of interest for use in severe thermal environments. The present paper introduces the heat balance concept to be applied to the transpiration cooling of re-entry vehicles. The cooling mechanisms are described in detail and in order to pre-estimate the cooling efficiency of the transpiration, a heat balance is to be derived. The strategy adopts an analytical method and presents in the paper the first results, including the expected heat flux to a tilted heat shield of a vehicle. Parts of the theoretical approach will be compared to the experimental and numerical results, showing that good results are obtained for laminar flow.
