Kurzfassung
We present a method capable of measuring the velocity field in a 7.00m x 3.50m plane of a large-scale Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) experiment using an adapted Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. The structure of the flow in RB convection is well known for a few numbers of geometries and Rayleigh (Ra)-numbers Ra<1011. Our test cell known as the Barrel of Ilmenau is a cylindrical box with a diameter of 7.15m and a variable height up to 6.30m and filled with air. A heated plate at the bottom and a cooled plate at the top cause a convective motion of the air in the interior of the cell. In order to make visible this flow soap bubbles filled with Helium are blown into the cell. By using the PIV technique, consisting of a pulsed 160mJ-NdYAG laser and two 1.3MPixel cameras the velocity field can be measured and analysed.
