Kurzfassung
Extreme heat is a growing challenge worldwide caused by climate change, particularly affecting displaced people, who are among the most vulnerable groups. This study examines the risks posed by extreme heat to displaced populations, with a particular focus on internally displaced people (IDPs) living in camps in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Using qualitative expert interviews, the study maps out impact webs that illustrate the interplay between hazards, vulnerability, exposure, and their underlying drivers and root causes. Key risks include physical and psychological health impacts, disruption of basic camp services, economic strain, food insecurity, tensions among IDPs and IDPs the host community, and the risk of secondary displacement. These risks are shaped by a number of factors, including inadequate health care, limited coping capacities due to insufficient camp infrastructure and limited financial resources, and lack of awareness of heat-related hazards. The analysis shows that these risks are interconnected, often compounding and cascading each other. The findings of this research underscore the need for a systemic approach across different sectors to address these risks. Therefore, priorities should include the development of sustainable and resilient camp infrastructure, early warning systems and heat Action plans. Raising awareness and prioritizing vulnerable groups within camps are also critical steps to improve preparedness and response. As climate change continues to exacerbate these challenges, the thesis calls for addressing heat risks as a critical priority in both research and practice, urging further research to refine Adaptation strategies and enhance resilience in humanitarian settings.
