Kurzfassung
Mobility in urban areas is still highly dominated by private car use, which has societal effects such as climate change. In traffic, people are exposed to air pollution, noise, risk of traffic injuries, heat and lack of green spaces, which impacts health and wellbeing profoundly. Promoting active modes of transport improves individual health and societal sustainability patterns. Recently, providing information through smartphone apps to motivate behavior change has gained attention. Its success depends on individual commitment and motivation. Considering the health impacts of traffic and the increase in mobility apps, we investigate to what extent the “health” dimension is represented by mobility apps applied in mobility behavior change studies and examine how the health dimension can motivate mobility behavior change. Following a systematic literature review, we (1) review empirical studies which make use of mobility apps for mobility behavior changes and (2) explore how, and to what extent, the dimension “health” and its components are addressed. Our results indicate that studies mainly focus on environmental dimensions, especially CO2-emissions. The health dimension is represented only in terms of physical activity or calories burned. The self-exposure to air pollutants, noise, heat, traffic injuries or green spaces are rarely addressed. We suggest future mobility app studies consider these health-related factors. Addressing people’s self-protective motivation can be a possible trigger for behavior change towards healthy and sustainable mobility.
