Kurzfassung
In this work, we explore the feasibility of EPIC/DSCOVR to support the development of cloud algorithms for the Geo-Ring constellation (GEMS, TEMPO and Sentinel-4). Since the estimation of cloud fraction by means of OCRA (Optical Cloud Recognition Algorithm) needs cloud-free maps generated with at least one year of mission measurements, there is a gap in the first year of a mission in which the OCRA cloud-free maps need to be generated by other means. Thanks to the unique view of EPIC/DSCOVR, we show that EPIC measurements are suitable to successfully create fallback cloud-free maps for the Geo-Ring constellation missions, taking the GEMS instrument as a test case. The same fallback procedure for OCRA will be applied operationally for Sentinel-4 during the first year of mission.
