Kurzfassung
The relevance of space weather and its effects is significant and will continue to grow in the coming years, since our government, society, and economy become more dependent on advanced technologies and downstream services. To understand sporadic but massive eruptions of high-energy particles and radiation from the Sun along with its effects on ground and space-based systems and services (e.g. for navigation, communication and Earth observation) is crucial to mitigate their impact. We will show the influence of selected past space weather events as well as actual conditions on navigation and communication services. We will present recent research on modeling and predicting the effects of space weather on Earth using information from real-time monitoring networks. Finally, we will discuss observational needs to close existing gaps in monitoring and moreover modelling of the solar-terrestrial interaction chain.
