Kurzfassung
Situation awareness is a critical component for driving performance and safety, especially when the driver is out of the loop and should take over an automated vehicle. To enhance safety in the driving task, head-up displays with augmented reality are being considered as a key technology. In this paper, we propose a novel augmented reality-based attention guidance system for full windshield head-up displays for in-view and out-of-view objects. The proposed system takes the current gaze data into account to guide the user dynamically to the important objects rather than just highlighting the target. We conducted a user study to assess the attention guidance system on a simulated full windshield display. We explored how the gaze behavior of locating relevant objects changed when using the attention guidance system compared to the system with no visual cues as a baseline. Our results suggest that the proposed system significantly reduces the time to perceive the objects of interest.
