Kurzfassung
Space missions offer unique advantages, such as global coverage, a quiet environment and microgravity conditions over extended times, that can help unleash the full potential of quantum technologies. The current state of the art and future prospects in four key areas of quantum technologies in space will be reviewed. These areas are quantum communication, time and frequency distribution, quantum sensing, and Earth observation. Throughout the talk the benefits of exploiting the synergies between research on fundamental physics and more practical applications will be emphasized. Furthermore, the importance of ground-based demonstration prototypes as well as microgravity platforms such as drop towers, Einstein elevators and sounding rockets in order to reach the required technological maturity for space will be discussed too.
