Individual differences in the temporal progression of motion sickness and anxiety: the role of passengers’ trait anxiety and motion sickness history

In this study we investigated the impact of trait anxiety, and motion sickness susceptibility on passengers` Inflight anxiety and Inflight sickness severity. It was observed that: - State and trait anxiety are highly associated with motion sickness severity. - Motion sickness susceptibility is a predictor for future motion sickness. - Passengers with high trait anxiety have high scores of Inflight anxiety from the beginning of a flight. - Passengers with high trait anxiety and motion sickness susceptibility have a constantly high level of motion sickness severity during the whole flight. - Passengers with high motion sickness susceptibility and low trait anxiety show no symptoms at the beginning, but an increase in motion sickness severity over time. - Future research is needed to find out the physiological and psychological mechanisms which are responsible for the correlation between anxiety and motion sickness.
