Kurzfassung
The progressive desertification and the increasing worldwide population show clearly the need for a new possibility of cultivating plants as a foodsource. A lack of food supply following natural disasters is also a current problem. Due to the facts mentioned above the EDEN initiative at the German Aerospace Center had the idea of a mobile, expandable greenhouse (MEPA). If there is a shortage of food the MEPA could be transported to the area of need, where it works without human influence. The key omponent of the MEPA is the seed cultivation mat, where root bags are integrated. These root bags contain the required nutrients and the best Sub strate for the cultivated plant. The aim of this Master thesis is to create a radish- root bag for the MEPA system. After a literature research about the requirements of plants, different substrates and fertilizers three different experiments were performed. For examing the process daily reports were prepared. These included the growingstatus with the aid of the BBCH scale. The deadline was pointed on the 28th day after planting. The first experiment dealt with the analysis of the germination rate. The result was needed for the Evaluation of the following experiments. The second experiment analysed different substrates for radish. Vermiculite and Ricehulls (proportion 4:1) figured out as the best working substrate. In the third exper iment this substrate was mixed together with different fertilizers and was compared in regards to the suitability for the cultivation of radish. Because of a technical failure the results are not reproducible. The outcome of the experiments and the Master thesis is a good working rootbag for radish containing the substrate Vermiculite: Ricehulls. If the fertilization is waterbased, the prepared bag can be used in the MEPA for an easy and fast cultivation of radish.
