Kurzfassung
The increased public interest in green technology combined with new environmental policies results in the need of vehicles with a reduced global environmental impact. One technological option can be the usage of wood as biomaterial in order to reduce the carbon footprint. Due to excellent specific strength and stiffness, wooden layered composites (WLCs) may replace some structural or semi-structural parts of a vehicle currently made of steel alloys, aluminum alloys or plastics. Nowadays, WLCs, that replace classical materials, are not yet considered as load-bearing structural components and are therefore not included in the design and the simulation process. The challenges in the usage of wood or wooden layered composites in structural parts are currently investigated and two major issues have been identified yet - the wide scatter of characteristic values of wooden materials and the missing material model. This talk presents an approach to address the issue of a missing material model. Desired properties, the new material model should simulate, are identified firstly and prioritized secondly. An attempt is made to transfer knowledge from the material behavior and from the simulation of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) in LS-Dyna to a WLC. Similarities and differences between the two material classes are identified for this purpose and an approach to model the material behavior is made based on the state of the art - on literature data as well as simulation methods. The development of a fully qualified material model will contribute to the structural application of wooden layered composites in modern structures.
