Kurzfassung
This deliverable presents the development of CFD models for the simulation of fluid behaviour and specifically sloshing motions within large CFRP tanks as foreseen to be used for cryogenic hypersonic transport vehicles. The purpose of this task is twofold: The ability to be able to sufficiently predict the fluid sloshing motion within a specifically shaped and significantly large vessel for the extreme conditions, in terms of fluid properties, of LH2. Giving significant amount of data in terms of damping, frequency and fluid forces in order to develop a simplified sloshing model for this specific configuration and its future extensions. To this end two pathways were considered. First of all DLR applied a state of the art CFD tool, Open- FOAM, to provide predictions in the short run. Secondly, Cenaero aimed to improve these predictions by developing and subsequently applying a novel, high order simulation tool, based on the discontinuous Galerkin method, which would enable large eddy simulation of the tanks, and thereby a more precise prediction of damping.
