Abstract

ERS-1 Windscatterometer measurements over Siberia were investigated to determine the potential of coarse resolultion radar data for land cover mapping and monitoring. Two indices have been introduced: the Slope Index calculates the incidence angle dependence of the radar measurements, the Radar Backscatter Index (RBSI) combines Slope Index and radar backscatter intesnity. Using the RBSI, good correlations to canopy density were found and the freeze/thaw-transition can be determined. Promising correspondence was found with five-day interval time series of normalized radar cross sections and crop yield estimates.
